Writing about real estate and investing in the stock market led me to consider the meaning of wealth. What does it mean to reach the top of the pyramid?

For some, being wealthy means having an estate with a unique history of ownership. For me and many others, it's more about security and the chance to simply not have to worry about paying bills.

When I was younger, I dreamed about Jimmy Buffett's margarita-and-sunset lifestyle (I didn't know about his countless donations to charitable organizations).

As I've grown older, my focus has shifted to be more about providing a better life for my family. What could be more important than that?

The chance to give more back is the answer. Learning about the contributions of Warren Buffett, Jimmy Buffett, Bill Gates and Lady Leslie has been a huge motivator for me. Check out my article on billionaire philanthropy here. The work they've done is truly amazing.

Stories about iconic architectural homes and the aspirational lifestyle are meant as motivators. Stories about my investing blunders are meant as inspiration, to help readers feel comfortable and avoid the same mistakes.

So many believe they can't invest (I sure didn't), but money drowns under the weight of inflation every day. There is no choice when it comes to investing and this is a clear reason why the top 10 percent of American households own 90 percent of the stock market.
